Of course, these strategies could go under fire from some political opposition and criticism, but the backing of a foreign agreement could bolster support for both agreed positions for economic recovery both from the government and the grassroots. Policies and ordinances could be prompted to be enacted to follow through with the agreement with China and vice versa. Campaigns on the tightening of belts from the organizational to the individual level can be expected from the government. NGOs and other organizations can strongly advocate for these policies or criticize them either way. One of the strongest roots of slavery and racism in the United States came from the Christian belief that blackness was linked with evil. This notion was used as moral justification to capture, enslave, punish, mutilate, and otherwise just inhumanely treat darker-skinned African people. Even before the colonies had been well established, It was widely accepted in Christianity that blackness and black skin were evil. One root cause behind the mating of blackness with evil was the bubonic plague in Europe in the 14th century. The bubonic plague was a deadly epidemic which killed between thirty and fifty percent of Europe's population (close to seventy-five million people). The bubonic plague, because it wiped out at least a third of Europe's population, had very deep and lasting impacts on the course of history. When infected victims were very close to death, their skin would blacken as a result of hemorrhages, or blood clots. At this point, there was no hope for the victim . Hence the bubonic plague came to be known as the black death. It is also important to note that these were the middle ages, and people in this period suffered through frequent outbreaks of famine, disease, war, and generally economic hard times. Society was also not very progressive, and people lived in constant fear of God. The churches played a very large role in that 'dark' society and in time, the bubonic plague left an i ndelible mark on Christianity: black was evil and signified hunger, suffering, disease, hard times, and death. The second major contributor to the notion that blackness was evil had to do with the constant strife between western European Christian nations and the people of the middle east, typically Muslim in faith: "One of the defini... ... free...and baptism doth not bestow freedom on him, nor make any alteration in his temporal condition...we are also of the opinion, the master may legally compel him to return to the plantation ". Later revised versions of this philosophy which led to the fugitive slave clause in the constitution of the United States left out part about baptism, but it is important to note that their origins mentioned baptism. In this essay, I will be analyzing ways in which Steinbeck portrays (shows) difficult decisions made by characters, in the novel. George makes some tough decisions which all lead him to his misery. When George and Lennie are sitting near the fire, George says to Lennie, â€Å"‘if I was alone I could live so easy’ ‘no mess at all’, ‘An’ whatta I got†¦I got you!’ † George’s life is not easy because he has to deal with Lennie, who gets into trouble-most of the time. Choosing to take care of Lennie, instead of abandoning him is a tough choice; this is what leads George to this painful outcome. When talking to Carlson after killing Lennie, â€Å"George’s voice was almost a whisper. He looked at his hand that held the gun.† George is now lonely sand he feels guilty for taking Lennie’s life away. George chose to kill Lennie because if he didn’t, Lennie would be killed painfully by Curley, and George does not want Lennie to suffer. Candy is forced to make difficult choices which all result in him facing terrible outcomes. After the death of his dog, Candy says â€Å"‘I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to of let no stranger shoot my dog.’† Candy now has a feeling of regret and he misses his dog. Candy lets Carlson shoot his dog because he feels he has no other choice but to let him because he thinks they would kick him off the ranch. After finding Curley’s wife dead, knowing it was Lennie, Candy â€Å"spoke his greatest fear. ‘You an’ me can get that little place can’t we, George?’ ‘Candy dropped his head and looked down at the hay. He knew.’ † Candy’s dreams are now flattened as he knows that they will no longer continue to try to get the little ranch. He had so much hope when he decided to join George and Lennie on their dream, but now he has to stay on the ranch because he has no other options. Candy just wanted to get off the ranch and keep his dog, but could not do either because of the choices he was forced to make. These characters made hard decisions which they thought would make their lives better but instead they changed their lives for the worse. They all just wanted a happy life but they all lost the chance to get this happiness at the end of the novel. Whether their choices were forced or freely made,  they did not make the right decisions to reach their dreams.
